I've hung onto this jelly roll until recently when I put this baby quilt together using the Jelly Roll Jam pattern from the Fat Quarter Shop. This quilt is for a little boy that was born today! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVgNPn3qxt4Pp0mmd56pY75ZMoqOxQs__kKemDCSNJKjIza1XrHUxS-5fA-L1R2bV6wEclNkROwDNjb2OJM5QQD10f_R5XSmmUfXERZzgsFjUzZ7r3rjXdiq9mFgYfnQzRSIsKvlo2qvFw/s1600/IMG_7380.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVgNPn3qxt4Pp0mmd56pY75ZMoqOxQs__kKemDCSNJKjIza1XrHUxS-5fA-L1R2bV6wEclNkROwDNjb2OJM5QQD10f_R5XSmmUfXERZzgsFjUzZ7r3rjXdiq9mFgYfnQzRSIsKvlo2qvFw/s1600/IMG_7380.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I found this fabric at Joann's that coordinated well for the back, and I used scraps from the jelly roll to complete the binding.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This was a quick quilt to put together, and it looks great finished. I'm so glad I finished the quilt in time for the baby's birth. <br />

I found this <a href="http://diaryofaquiltmaven.blogspot.com/2013/01/faux-cathedral-windows-pincushion.html" target="_blank">Faux Cathedral Window Pattern</a> on the Diary of a Quilt Maven blog for a pin cushion and decided to use it to make a quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDhDyJjOTLLs3wJPdlsSPs75iQVfAwMVEhr7GmRpZh_42F14qt353qq8_MqYE91ZqJjNN2XOWDBHiuLcrli21JyIAF1aOAkySmZ1yVoYB25VypCvLFNoT4tS_N8ZPvbmv5oaCKX0KOGCGE/s1600/IMG_7285.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDhDyJjOTLLs3wJPdlsSPs75iQVfAwMVEhr7GmRpZh_42F14qt353qq8_MqYE91ZqJjNN2XOWDBHiuLcrli21JyIAF1aOAkySmZ1yVoYB25VypCvLFNoT4tS_N8ZPvbmv5oaCKX0KOGCGE/s1600/IMG_7285.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The short cuts did cut down on the amount of fabric used and still allowed me to enjoy the cathedral window pattern. I was able to really enhance the scrappiness throughout the whole quilt and throw in the occasional pink to welcome a baby girl, the intended recipient. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoweWjsxt4s7gVDaBvcxlovZBOOiKRkvxo06RykRNlzseQJJ3w1bpWZFptw9WuMAlbmYr51EcXE5ux3U1T8n2kwZsm9eTlGR8muWsMOMsAHUrChUwTv2OQ6_kn1L1vsaq_xtPHUvtKXL0q/s1600/IMG_7290.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoweWjsxt4s7gVDaBvcxlovZBOOiKRkvxo06RykRNlzseQJJ3w1bpWZFptw9WuMAlbmYr51EcXE5ux3U1T8n2kwZsm9eTlGR8muWsMOMsAHUrChUwTv2OQ6_kn1L1vsaq_xtPHUvtKXL0q/s1600/IMG_7290.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Although I appreciated the shortcuts, I was still dealing with a very thick quilt with some very thick seams to quilt through. I won't lie and tell you the quilting was a breeze. I broke 6 needles in the process. Lets just say I was thankful this was a baby quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqNySTuXSxoy_ckTCgbxyzjVabJu043CDesQBBCczpFadadlSrPMUacKOVWU7G3bt0QjNQQLo9TUgtv1_cFv1DWWxcAz0VBMeKn0rWbHiQQMu0-BUrlqvkdqgkeMVPYZtMLVsj2rsEVQB9/s1600/IMG_7292.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqNySTuXSxoy_ckTCgbxyzjVabJu043CDesQBBCczpFadadlSrPMUacKOVWU7G3bt0QjNQQLo9TUgtv1_cFv1DWWxcAz0VBMeKn0rWbHiQQMu0-BUrlqvkdqgkeMVPYZtMLVsj2rsEVQB9/s1600/IMG_7292.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I found this confetti print at <a href="http://btsewingstudio.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Bumbletees</a>, a local fabric shop in Germantown, TN. It really pulled all the colors together along with some fun orange. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkwBYRcv5WqI-U96V48KXpR_VHL0iIG_kwWltIPOWafTnjRks8X3pv2DVpTXcimICkVHZ1dE7CWduNNklP7p-UDJQaAFuPRPOCIT0QiofAScuPiTDjm2ygHYyOsoe_iV5AEKM1KKUCjHsm/s1600/IMG_7296.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkwBYRcv5WqI-U96V48KXpR_VHL0iIG_kwWltIPOWafTnjRks8X3pv2DVpTXcimICkVHZ1dE7CWduNNklP7p-UDJQaAFuPRPOCIT0QiofAScuPiTDjm2ygHYyOsoe_iV5AEKM1KKUCjHsm/s1600/IMG_7296.jpg" /></a></div>

This shot really helps to showcase the quilting of the quilt. Again, I focused on building and improving my free motion quilting skills.<br />

I'm glad I finally tackled the cathedral window pattern...sort of. I think I've fulfilled my desire to make this pattern. On to the next project...Janet @ Simply Piecedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07932316774768732089noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584545750846901013.post-43767197031087431032015-09-10T09:50:00.000-05:002015-09-10T09:50:30.684-05:00Quilts for Le BonheurThe Memphis Area Modern Quilt Guild has made the Le Bonheur infant floor it's primary outreach. Most people make baby quilts for the NICU babies, but they tend to forget about the ones not in NICU. We donated quilts last year to this floor and it was just a wonderful experience. We got to go up to the floor and take a tour. We got to donate quilts directly to some of the families on the floor. It touched us so much and decided right then that this was what we wanted to do as a guild each year.<br />
<br />
This year, I utilized a quilt I started in my Color Value class at Quiltcon with Cheryl Arkison. I learned a lot about the value of color and how to really develop a quilt by value and not by the color itself. It is an amazing skill that I'm glad to have been introduced to.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpRbmeeD991uyGmb6FwwmxMKj3eChdfHcYvi57yxJMtjxpE1qsofP9J3wjaDzOTAXo4tbDcF2ExDoyzmlm-4sUDzRXbNHiLc5-Yk7g0399-vlt5ehpppnEd57SUN4uS7e1zaC4l57Vhrrl/s1600/IMG_7276.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpRbmeeD991uyGmb6FwwmxMKj3eChdfHcYvi57yxJMtjxpE1qsofP9J3wjaDzOTAXo4tbDcF2ExDoyzmlm-4sUDzRXbNHiLc5-Yk7g0399-vlt5ehpppnEd57SUN4uS7e1zaC4l57Vhrrl/s1600/IMG_7276.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I've found that yellows are the exception to the value rule. I think I'll be spending some more time evaluating my yellow selections in the future. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjI3HUdgrRDYy8g7ufxxugFLvKtRMhOiHX3A8-4HGPpE1rVEN7Y93f9UjaFf25-u6Dx5zQ3OjW4uCbCcSfwT6uUABIJwyYJVNRgH0vLnqUv00vKhQI-OecIY6b_Dmwau2PfEG33UMlYAwM/s1600/IMG_7277.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjI3HUdgrRDYy8g7ufxxugFLvKtRMhOiHX3A8-4HGPpE1rVEN7Y93f9UjaFf25-u6Dx5zQ3OjW4uCbCcSfwT6uUABIJwyYJVNRgH0vLnqUv00vKhQI-OecIY6b_Dmwau2PfEG33UMlYAwM/s1600/IMG_7277.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The quilting was a fun Free-Motion Quilting (FMQ) practice. It has been my goal to get more comfortable with my FMQ this year. I've found the smaller the quilt the easier, but I'm sure I'll be tackling more difficult FMQ projects in the future.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The back is just some fabric from Joann's that coordinated really well with the assortment of fabrics used on the front. This will be a wonderful little quilt for a special little someone in need and I'm so glad I get to participate. For those of you in quilt guilds, what type of service projects to you participate in?Janet @ Simply Piecedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07932316774768732089noreply@blogger.com24tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584545750846901013.post-16427975836373539682015-09-03T10:05:00.000-05:002015-09-03T10:05:38.047-05:00Broadway Mini Quilt SwapI have a love for Broadway musicals. I've already bought my pass for this season's Broadway series with the Memphis Orpheum. I can't wait to be able to introduce my children to the wonders of singing and dancing on stage. It's going to be great!<br />
<br />
When I saw the Broadway Mini Quilt Swap on Instagram, I signed up immediately! I couldn't even begin to describe the excitement. My all-time favorite is Wicked. When my swap partner also indicated she loved Wicked, I went for it. I found a paper-piecing pattern of Elphaba online and expanded it a bit.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3J3Tw8hGuS_FGUTil5HBVv5GrU5c70OgvIYBATtqQuq6khCVzhETgdk3yJTGJx2BvpfeSEvhyUC4TRazUF68Ue5dvrVeoTGo7NbTZi1fMRTxxRH-jzTTQr1aIMRUlsvcOp4eHVZmlRHuS/s1600/IMG_7200.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3J3Tw8hGuS_FGUTil5HBVv5GrU5c70OgvIYBATtqQuq6khCVzhETgdk3yJTGJx2BvpfeSEvhyUC4TRazUF68Ue5dvrVeoTGo7NbTZi1fMRTxxRH-jzTTQr1aIMRUlsvcOp4eHVZmlRHuS/s1600/IMG_7200.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I then used tracing paper to draw the Wicked musical logo onto the black fabric and stitched it out. It took a while to complete this, but the texture it brought to the quilt was great. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN25EuU9JQEUhxPpDciSr4QIFM8nVQ8YZR4h7OOQij1bQcJGHqs5rfWiqqcmZ7xg2RR4m90_ofC4AuFgM-7EMq2CQwrIyEUY9oDhZBehln5kbBzi2j9hHcA8Iw9XDOuR1a1zglP80MLGwV/s1600/IMG_7205.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN25EuU9JQEUhxPpDciSr4QIFM8nVQ8YZR4h7OOQij1bQcJGHqs5rfWiqqcmZ7xg2RR4m90_ofC4AuFgM-7EMq2CQwrIyEUY9oDhZBehln5kbBzi2j9hHcA8Iw9XDOuR1a1zglP80MLGwV/s1600/IMG_7205.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I struggled with the quilting of this one. I didn't know quite what to do or how to approach it. In the end, I'm glad I went with some dense wavy lines. It adds a fun element without taking away from the piecing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1SPz-Wv0pq3cUoOjMKK1QMBcYIW1gya04DLsIvaPuSmHWiFttLx3xETtYDeb0BYYdZrPII1Ch8KYvYf1DrbSfQboRmvs3GxP_FNI1CcCehYPpG8oWhphYygTyLlMMQoQRcNvVgRAz2Vj3/s1600/IMG_7206.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1SPz-Wv0pq3cUoOjMKK1QMBcYIW1gya04DLsIvaPuSmHWiFttLx3xETtYDeb0BYYdZrPII1Ch8KYvYf1DrbSfQboRmvs3GxP_FNI1CcCehYPpG8oWhphYygTyLlMMQoQRcNvVgRAz2Vj3/s1600/IMG_7206.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The back is just a solid piece. I found this print at Joann's that matched exactly. I decided to not make things more complicated and finish with a solid piece. Since this is a wall hanging, the back really doesn't matter too much. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHY08Hdv72bW1E2fSdp1_pHhjaMXrJ1qcFRazxRXSQqKWwJ4yqWL6q9eOYjOYb7wNtb8mRJsTGnVVYHpc4fG4VNRPjhP0cTQIgzmDCVRxUe5dB2f-SKIV2pzFpCItxgGZyYzBtUfOC2bXu/s1600/IMG_7211.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHY08Hdv72bW1E2fSdp1_pHhjaMXrJ1qcFRazxRXSQqKWwJ4yqWL6q9eOYjOYb7wNtb8mRJsTGnVVYHpc4fG4VNRPjhP0cTQIgzmDCVRxUe5dB2f-SKIV2pzFpCItxgGZyYzBtUfOC2bXu/s1600/IMG_7211.jpg" /></a></div>

I had so much fun making this mini. I think I'm done with online swaps for this year, but next year should be lots of fun.Janet @ Simply Piecedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07932316774768732089noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584545750846901013.post-74693032289276123962015-08-24T10:24:00.000-05:002015-08-24T10:24:15.923-05:00My First Mini SwapThis year I decided to participate in a couple of online mini quilt swaps. The first one I joined was the Cotton and Steel Mini Quilt Swap. I just love the Cotton and Steel line and it sounded like loads of fun. I also fell in love with the <a href="http://jeliquilts.blogspot.com/2015/02/tissue-box-mini-quilt.html" target="_blank">tissue box mini pattern</a> by Jeli Quilts. Combining the two led to this fun creation.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfBVH0-057dUMQczj1TNT59xiOlXcIHe9dXR3ZnVy2q0tlfexzaoXMu9vgDi4SDkoFgGOy_b8A1VYlykXC0iJgI6E-QhFt08S1glQqrrWuFPwUjSLK5vLQViniN2IuR7X9qrMu2RNzyMOO/s1600/IMG_6199.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfBVH0-057dUMQczj1TNT59xiOlXcIHe9dXR3ZnVy2q0tlfexzaoXMu9vgDi4SDkoFgGOy_b8A1VYlykXC0iJgI6E-QhFt08S1glQqrrWuFPwUjSLK5vLQViniN2IuR7X9qrMu2RNzyMOO/s1600/IMG_6199.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
It was a bit of a challenge placing the correct color in the correct spot, but it all worked out well in the end. This pattern really does a nice job showcasing lots of prints all at once. The original tissue box mini is absolutely amazing using solids.<br />

The back is just some slicing and dicing. I knew I needed to utilize the fabrics and wanted a bit more interest than just a solid back. <br />

My first mini quilt swap was a success. We mailed the mini back in June, so I'm a bit behind on my posts. I'm trying to catch up I promise! I currently do not have a computer at home, and my frequency of blog posts has dropped dramatically. I've really missed the online community, but I hope to have a solution soon. Stay tuned!Janet @ Simply Piecedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07932316774768732089noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584545750846901013.post-9530578632871545652015-07-23T19:00:00.000-05:002015-07-23T19:00:00.260-05:00TGIFF!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Welcome to TGIFF! It's that time of the week to share all our wonderful finishes. This week I finished a star baby quilt for some dear friends of ours. Their baby is due next week so I really was cutting it close with this one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH2xilNG7Cd9Ado3X252DVVOajIV-vAhHBNpXaVfn00D7A0RUcInNm_ET5c9xz4akUGd_I0otFmBYCS_RW27S7Ttj5g35v5BdFZU3G99pprZbBzUGcz9oukv0nGWThBF2qDjhfZmIY0-W4/s1600/IMG_7167.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH2xilNG7Cd9Ado3X252DVVOajIV-vAhHBNpXaVfn00D7A0RUcInNm_ET5c9xz4akUGd_I0otFmBYCS_RW27S7Ttj5g35v5BdFZU3G99pprZbBzUGcz9oukv0nGWThBF2qDjhfZmIY0-W4/s1600/IMG_7167.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
This quilt allowed me to utilize some of my scraps from other projects. I really love how the colors pop against the dark gray and the text print.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The text print is actual chemical equations. The dad is Dr. Chemistry himself so this was truly fitting. I'm sure the baby will be able to understand all those equations by the time he/she starts kindergarten. <br />

The back ties into the front with the elements in the periodic table. When I found the <a href="http://www.pinkcastlefabrics.com/products/novelty-equations-in-white" target="_blank">Equations</a> and <a href="http://www.pinkcastlefabrics.com/products/novelty-periodic-in-white" target="_blank">Periodic</a> fabrics at <a href="http://www.pinkcastlefabrics.com/" target="_blank">Pink Castle Fabrics</a>, I just couldn't decided which one to go with. I ordered both and I couldn't be more please with the results.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5v59EPAujSmzIWHeNtXF5YsC8oz6sb978UmgNkmy0AlKGTYBgz7l9l8xXRdzjkxXLSvMfW_VaYIr-MTZvqMez0_TiGZlOnj1lo-sU2olqdJSyQ-DMGFH7o1k79_QsMneLzy2oTIjNXZ8O/s1600/IMG_5987.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5v59EPAujSmzIWHeNtXF5YsC8oz6sb978UmgNkmy0AlKGTYBgz7l9l8xXRdzjkxXLSvMfW_VaYIr-MTZvqMez0_TiGZlOnj1lo-sU2olqdJSyQ-DMGFH7o1k79_QsMneLzy2oTIjNXZ8O/s1600/IMG_5987.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
There are 528 half-square triangles in this quilt. Talk about a lot of trimming!<br />
<br />

<br />
I ended up using Windham Fabric's wide quilt back writing for the backing. This is the first time I've used wide quilt backing, and I must say it was wonderful. I've always pieced my backs before today, but I might just be looking for more opportunities to use the wide backing in the future. It saved so much time!<br />
<br />

<br />
I used Kona Royal Blue for the binding. I really think the blue compliments the quilt nicely and doesn't distract from the pattern. <br />

Janet @ Simply Piecedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07932316774768732089noreply@blogger.com37tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584545750846901013.post-42166021727924870082015-05-08T11:48:00.000-05:002015-05-08T12:02:33.090-05:00Star Cluster SurpriseBack in January the original members of the Memphis Area Modern Quilt Guild started to collaborate and conspire against one of our own. Jenny, one of our members, is expecting her first baby very soon, and we just couldn't let the event pass by without celebrating it. Our February meeting just so happened to be at Jenny's house, and we took the opportunity to ask her all kinds of typical questions. The most important question asked that would interest a quilter in particular is about the nursery colors (navy, white, gray, and pink). Once we had collected our much needed info, we choose our block pattern (a star block), we decided on where to showcase the nursery colors in the quilt, and we had one month to finish two star blocks before the next meeting.<br />
<br />
The March meeting was entertaining with all the block hand-offs. We were trying not to bring attention to ourselves, but I'm sure some of our new members could tell something was up. One of the contributors offered to donate batting for the quilt. We sat outside of a restaurant for two hours after our meeting chatting with Jenny about anything and everything. Little did she know that we were waiting for her to leave so the batting could be handed off. The one person we didn't want to notice seemed to be completely oblivious to our scheming, so we were in good shape.<br />
<br />
With all the blocks in hand, I got busy piecing the front, piecing the back, basting, quilting, and binding. I had 4 weeks to finish this quilt. That's not usually a bit deal for me, but I was also working on a queen size custom order at the same time. It all worked out in the end and the quilt was completed in time. <br />
<br />
The April meeting was a rush. Jenny, who habitually shows up late to our meetings, was actually early! We had to work around it and still act like nothing was going on. We had a cake hidden under pizza boxes. The quilt was finished except for the writing on the quilt label. Jenny almost walked in on that one. We incorporated her quilt into our show and tell during the meeting. One of our members held it up and Jenny's immediate reaction was, "Awwww!" She still didn't know it was hers. We asked her to go up and stand by the quilt and then it all clicked. It was a successful surprise. We had a lot of fun putting everything together and honoring one of our beloved guild members.<br />

Hello Everyone! It's another wonderful Friday and time to show off what you've finished this week! I finished a quilt called Diamond Pastures. I used a Cotton and Steal layered cake of Melody Miller's Mustang collection. I paired up my HST with one warm fabric and one cool fabric. It really helped this pattern pop!</div>
<div class="post-body entry-content" id="post-body-6653317800230802836" itemprop="description articleBody">

<br />
This was a pretty easy quilt to put together with large HST, but the design really does stand out due to the color pairing.<br />

I straight-lined quilted the quilt using Aurifil 50wt white thread. <br />

I find a real joy in using my hands to put together a gift that comes directly from the heart. I know every piece of fabric in a quilt. I know every stitch. I know the joy of overcoming a challenging pattern, and I know the frustration of completely having to redo a section that just didn't come out right. In the end, I always have a quilt that was made with love for the intended recipient(s).<br />
<br />
There are always scraps left over when I finish a quilt. I try to be a good steward of the resources in my sewing room and not be wasteful. I save my scraps to be utilized at a later date. This scrappy flying geese quilt is really the culmination of all those gifted quilts made before it. I can look at each fabric and remember the story of its origin. I can see the babies that were born, the children that were adopted, and the couples whose weddings celebrated the beginning of a wonderful journey. I no longer see a simple piece of fabric, but a life story.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR_R3CeIGLscHmNCuc1PB1YL_KYCiyYKeSUbRiZbK3hBDD_MOiU8zTetLopPCwUKCTZAvV77c2Sn-7grhqKEsXX-9041Ok214_UUOC8KYdbMyQx9ArA5AR5pxBmSVljXpRYLakGZvjuf1y/s1600/IMG_5754.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR_R3CeIGLscHmNCuc1PB1YL_KYCiyYKeSUbRiZbK3hBDD_MOiU8zTetLopPCwUKCTZAvV77c2Sn-7grhqKEsXX-9041Ok214_UUOC8KYdbMyQx9ArA5AR5pxBmSVljXpRYLakGZvjuf1y/s1600/IMG_5754.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I truly love how all these fabrics came together. I couldn't have asked for a better result considering I didn't have a plan when I initially started <a href="http://simplypieced.blogspot.com/2014/11/scrap-busting-part-2.html" target="_blank">piecing</a> everything together back in November. It's so bright and cheerful. It's also a simple flying geese pattern that gives off the impression of complexity with the use of all those scraps.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglKfG9HkXupohYAD0WhhWzohwin5wxCMQDY2q8X4X_iXtTFX5sOfG8BjNCKSmChi_U0hFJt4Z5tw6esjH8ljR_IClCJRhy16bwCmWWg650dsXghWzfcge-zbAlnm2UBhyphenhyphen1p1Nx2KqU552z/s1600/IMG_5767.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglKfG9HkXupohYAD0WhhWzohwin5wxCMQDY2q8X4X_iXtTFX5sOfG8BjNCKSmChi_U0hFJt4Z5tw6esjH8ljR_IClCJRhy16bwCmWWg650dsXghWzfcge-zbAlnm2UBhyphenhyphen1p1Nx2KqU552z/s1600/IMG_5767.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
For the back I found this fabric at Joann's that really complimented the front perfectly. I had some help from Kelly (<a href="http://myquiltinfatuation.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">My Quilt Infatuation</a>) and Jenny, two fellow members of the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/202052123277164/" target="_blank">Memphis Area MQG</a>. I picked this sketched-orange fabric for the binding to add a pop to the quilt. It blends in nicely with the front but really pops on the back.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBzhxcr2R3rvTr5hvgZCP2RE0cnEzBjAxxIwaoT6-M525_8k8fC55BrFQZVZts8gsvY3zGD14yqTLRcgsYsCI14nexiVWcHztEZBxZeHqEXKp94kUl-nubX6Em0TnnEJqi5GubB-f6Ba9N/s1600/IMG_5778.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBzhxcr2R3rvTr5hvgZCP2RE0cnEzBjAxxIwaoT6-M525_8k8fC55BrFQZVZts8gsvY3zGD14yqTLRcgsYsCI14nexiVWcHztEZBxZeHqEXKp94kUl-nubX6Em0TnnEJqi5GubB-f6Ba9N/s1600/IMG_5778.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
When I started making this quilt, it didn't have a purpose other than to be just another quilt to snuggle under. A few weeks ago, I was approached by my best friend, Camille, to make a quilt to help raise money for an international adoption by a local Memphis-area woman who wants desperately to grow her family and bring her new 9-year-old daughter home from Central America. I knew this quilt, a collection of life celebrations, was perfect in welcoming home a child into a new home.<br />
<br />
I have personally seen the wonderful world of adoption through Camille, the aforementioned best friend. She has adopted 5 children into her family, ranging from newborn babies to fully grown teenagers. Her heart is bigger than most, and she doesn't hesitate to reach out and help others in their own adoption journey. The chance to win this quilt requires only a $25 donation. You can read in more detail about the fundraiser on Camille's blog, <a href="http://embracingtheodyssey.com/win-a-quilt-make-a-family/" target="_blank">Embracing the Odyssey</a>. She has links on her page where you can make a donation and also learn more about the family you will be helping. Every little bit helps and brings this family that much closer to being together at last.<br />

It's been a bit overwhelming being back home with the daily demands of life along with a few hiccups...namely coughs, congestion, sneezes, fevers, and upset stomachs. I wish my life as a mother didn't always have to take precedence, but it has. Thankfully, I think we are all on the mend.<br />
<br />
The first thing I would like to share with you is the QuiltCon Pin Swap. I'm sure most of you on Instagram are very aware of the pin swapping that was going on at QuiltCon. It was an amazing way to be able to introduce yourself to new people and strike up a conversation by simply swapping pins. Of course, while you are swapping pins, your lanyard starts to get a little heavy as you attach each one. By the end of the day on Saturday, my lanyard was becoming a bit cumbersome with several pins in my pockets since I had completely run out of room.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB0-KJ-6dXoLJ4kDTEDvzGC_u5Hz-cl_x8rfGXEdFlbt0mYiuaSYeqC_T0KcOllNQwAduAQt6bZbjMNnGbu0oGO7THBFIq-SSFjFsH8iFM-d_-QGW2u2XQ6BbhNiRSZ_HtBggyMOMKaDlT/s1600/IMG_5624.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB0-KJ-6dXoLJ4kDTEDvzGC_u5Hz-cl_x8rfGXEdFlbt0mYiuaSYeqC_T0KcOllNQwAduAQt6bZbjMNnGbu0oGO7THBFIq-SSFjFsH8iFM-d_-QGW2u2XQ6BbhNiRSZ_HtBggyMOMKaDlT/s1600/IMG_5624.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Even the Sewlebrities were joining in on the pins! I just had to add a picture of my favorite fabric designer, Denyse Schmidt in there! :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
By Saturday night, I had transferred all my pins to my conference bag to give me some relief.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJFsjRgABZlf15VRWxvOsSpTvyOPt8Hgf4fCWMlim8OZs7IbDjFbkOWbDVQfbdZaB5Dy1x9TjmnqvttNzmEYzE08aDtRXiH9jxdPUGCTYLE9wZED-5xyBqG_9Fk3PgRJnTu408nKTF6Si8/s1600/IMG_5666.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJFsjRgABZlf15VRWxvOsSpTvyOPt8Hgf4fCWMlim8OZs7IbDjFbkOWbDVQfbdZaB5Dy1x9TjmnqvttNzmEYzE08aDtRXiH9jxdPUGCTYLE9wZED-5xyBqG_9Fk3PgRJnTu408nKTF6Si8/s1600/IMG_5666.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I ended up collecting different mini-charm packs at QuiltCon through the swag bag, venders, and presenters. I put my Riley Blake solids, American Made Brand solids, and my Alison Glass mini-charms together to form this fun little mini quilt to hold all my QuiltCon pins now that I'm home.<br />

<br />
I also built up the courage and did a little FMQ on the mini quilt. I really like the way it turned out. <br />

My pins now have a lovely home on the wall in my sewing room. I will be able to look upon them with fondness as I remember my first Quiltcon experience. <br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAnGcynIEP2gWsJxv56cw_FEqPx2Gqtd3s9Ah_9I9wJRotPpw_jn8_MqRgLEEKTvzYb-AQfbJCOajzsYSkbMMPV3XYjWaydLGb9j3PCvhkvP9tRWXIZDkRthA5TLB7Cdm1yYUpfeKq7ohy/s1600/IMG_5419.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAnGcynIEP2gWsJxv56cw_FEqPx2Gqtd3s9Ah_9I9wJRotPpw_jn8_MqRgLEEKTvzYb-AQfbJCOajzsYSkbMMPV3XYjWaydLGb9j3PCvhkvP9tRWXIZDkRthA5TLB7Cdm1yYUpfeKq7ohy/s1600/IMG_5419.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I searched for a while for tutorials for the Union Jack but couldn't decide on one to use. I also thought about creating a large paper-piecing template to create one but changed my mind. I ended up finding a <a href="https://www.fabric.com/buy/0321874/riley-blake-union-jack-36-panel-blue" target="_blank">Union Jack panel</a> by Riley Blake on <a href="http://fabric.com/">Fabric.com</a>. Not only did is save me lots of time, it also was the perfect size for a baby quilt. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1SuvUKSoK-Qn2O2Cg4vzY0c14ucNE36ZlGdHOtrPR85AjBty37lnDej-P__Ps_3i_nTsZ9b04Jf8Y-lgTANHfCC5ZgR5g10mpuUhxYTeKPN3yJl-LS4DoVAkfrijaPXowcot30_wiIZos/s1600/IMG_5402.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1SuvUKSoK-Qn2O2Cg4vzY0c14ucNE36ZlGdHOtrPR85AjBty37lnDej-P__Ps_3i_nTsZ9b04Jf8Y-lgTANHfCC5ZgR5g10mpuUhxYTeKPN3yJl-LS4DoVAkfrijaPXowcot30_wiIZos/s1600/IMG_5402.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUiqvdyEUb6jPBbBnJ0vIPZNxp9t74nMjE5mITD2UlH5WFQvmH7e_gIXypgxOrdO__67BQgCNlTFCVXd1m8zjKLEm41Ez9D5X3pRfl27v_2oCWj6Q_EpO-bAeXOmNUaYHW9cU3cozwHOuN/s1600/IMG_5413.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUiqvdyEUb6jPBbBnJ0vIPZNxp9t74nMjE5mITD2UlH5WFQvmH7e_gIXypgxOrdO__67BQgCNlTFCVXd1m8zjKLEm41Ez9D5X3pRfl27v_2oCWj6Q_EpO-bAeXOmNUaYHW9cU3cozwHOuN/s1600/IMG_5413.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
For the quilting, I kept my lines tight and echoed the Union Jack pattern. I also changed the thread color to match the color on the flag. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPn7IJf-IaKUtu67sNGsfHctt4OzsGNHM3nmyWYw3eF3gg5EhJahLfTkKVvGRUo1Ap_LmTyvkWoRB_Twtex0e4I5s2w52B5uYQ9ZtpO5kSyRyRHhpBSIuL3p2POpWAtpJTItRYnMANFwOC/s1600/IMG_5411.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPn7IJf-IaKUtu67sNGsfHctt4OzsGNHM3nmyWYw3eF3gg5EhJahLfTkKVvGRUo1Ap_LmTyvkWoRB_Twtex0e4I5s2w52B5uYQ9ZtpO5kSyRyRHhpBSIuL3p2POpWAtpJTItRYnMANFwOC/s1600/IMG_5411.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I was hoping the thread color change would give the illusion of the Union Jack on the back of the quilt, but I think the print on the back didn't allow for the quilting to come through quite as well. I love the backing fabric too much to care in the long run. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlFqynRckHrE3ExHvLo2dizF6zIdSkV1McIhfshOi7VpWbIrzBJgY3lE96iznM4fxA-PShEzsw3GhmKWBK1SM05EsYZHa-d1XNNCS70o8QwxnL8rR0xDZ_5ncURyGm7aUW5M6Hb18MFC_J/s1600/IMG_5420.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlFqynRckHrE3ExHvLo2dizF6zIdSkV1McIhfshOi7VpWbIrzBJgY3lE96iznM4fxA-PShEzsw3GhmKWBK1SM05EsYZHa-d1XNNCS70o8QwxnL8rR0xDZ_5ncURyGm7aUW5M6Hb18MFC_J/s1600/IMG_5420.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The mopeds on the back tie in perfectly with the travel-themed nursery and the road map of London hanging above the crib. Such a great theme for a little boy!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVFssSsV-PpAHGMWQYXyUIxpI8CC5rVaFGVMzL3Edb-8w7OzY-9zmcIh9kXxHfZN5yZTXwKqlKmkOoPshRF6-06OQhKX-BM-7chrOV5v2LKDNGq1baodHQhihgH_2kkJdm-GnwBaED6RHo/s1600/IMG_5398.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVFssSsV-PpAHGMWQYXyUIxpI8CC5rVaFGVMzL3Edb-8w7OzY-9zmcIh9kXxHfZN5yZTXwKqlKmkOoPshRF6-06OQhKX-BM-7chrOV5v2LKDNGq1baodHQhihgH_2kkJdm-GnwBaED6RHo/s1600/IMG_5398.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Once the baby outgrows his quilt, this will be a perfect wall-hanging for decoration.<br />

<br />
I have been anticipating this day for a year and a half, and I might need to pinch myself in the morning when we (my mother, son, and I) load up the car and start our road trip to Austin, TX. This has been a dream of mine, and I'm having a hard time believing it's going to be a reality very soon.<br />
<br />
I've spent the last month and a half prepping for Quiltcon. I made a name tag and a lanyard. I completely missed the lanyard swap for Quiltcon, so I went ahead and made my own.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhncYEMMWaQr0c7F890FZx75kU0SruvgfKKD3NQb4SrrzaSN3gfdOKcd9nl_Mwz2UdwjYzFT9n11RGb2MBFSdfTQ8SGk0TzOXXaIGpkg6vpsxK19erqG_sURmyuoFAOTXyyFq0hUn_joOsO/s1600/IMG_5295.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhncYEMMWaQr0c7F890FZx75kU0SruvgfKKD3NQb4SrrzaSN3gfdOKcd9nl_Mwz2UdwjYzFT9n11RGb2MBFSdfTQ8SGk0TzOXXaIGpkg6vpsxK19erqG_sURmyuoFAOTXyyFq0hUn_joOsO/s1600/IMG_5295.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I ordered pins so I can participate in the pin swap.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfDmIWxxyKhkn0VY2s_yFbj0p7D6h7rVZJlpq12k6HehIB2daQ6um08qzXXA0oymELTCY5Iue5n2s5KqFZUqLj-8uWppqPxHmZziAYe_PFVeJQ9tuf7Ya2yDG6MqBBDQTO4JZF0yFuInYd/s1600/IMG_5251.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfDmIWxxyKhkn0VY2s_yFbj0p7D6h7rVZJlpq12k6HehIB2daQ6um08qzXXA0oymELTCY5Iue5n2s5KqFZUqLj-8uWppqPxHmZziAYe_PFVeJQ9tuf7Ya2yDG6MqBBDQTO4JZF0yFuInYd/s1600/IMG_5251.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
I ordered pins for my local guild so we can represent while we are there. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIUKfCStx-2E_SIJHWH_mMEWdeP3-11lNsLsDO_bmx-Nfu3rhMZn9ZTh-k58dmlQZxwDvnRphaGErzTW5RjlUwzAahYNuS-lYl_hmHn0RHQuEMEmosiE9hS7xJFuyh5iIj0TKBpDTYdrX_/s1600/IMG_5291.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIUKfCStx-2E_SIJHWH_mMEWdeP3-11lNsLsDO_bmx-Nfu3rhMZn9ZTh-k58dmlQZxwDvnRphaGErzTW5RjlUwzAahYNuS-lYl_hmHn0RHQuEMEmosiE9hS7xJFuyh5iIj0TKBpDTYdrX_/s1600/IMG_5291.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I put a box of my business cards in my supplies so I have them readily available to hand out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKC6hInOqpgtzxYkCEZOoo23Q-HNjnaL9h3M0KxTIDYhrh2iHlSCHZUcNjAwadvvrnFqCg_nmWE6Wi_4cR8u01UfbJruMBCwSo4VGOGiWauPiVqxn-P3Ts2zmzQ7rrmR9pBDE31HcNyUFS/s1600/IMG_4161.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKC6hInOqpgtzxYkCEZOoo23Q-HNjnaL9h3M0KxTIDYhrh2iHlSCHZUcNjAwadvvrnFqCg_nmWE6Wi_4cR8u01UfbJruMBCwSo4VGOGiWauPiVqxn-P3Ts2zmzQ7rrmR9pBDE31HcNyUFS/s1600/IMG_4161.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I made two very practical bags to utilize while at Quiltcon. The first was a <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/sewing/accessory/sew-together-bag/36309" target="_blank">Sew Together Bag</a> by SewDemented. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The second was a <a href="http://ohfransson.bigcartel.com/product/sewing-circle-tote-pdf-sewing-pattern" target="_blank">Sewing Circle Tote</a> by Elizabeth Hartman. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I prepped for the two classes I'll be taking. The Dot to Dot Quilting with Angela Walters is just a supply fee, so that was easy. I love straight line quilting, but I want to explore more FMQ. I thought this class would be perfect.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh4b3tpVCIDzJjciaulDg1f_JUbCnM4ajy1LxETVhlb-Holo3MpjK3VKb0xMgdcrgpxsGTvbSr-BgAh3D7grj9XMvd4cmJUH3oEDph2Y4cH-nEyJoPNN99nlCV5_15LSfkuMeSZE1zdT4e/s1600/IMG_5427.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh4b3tpVCIDzJjciaulDg1f_JUbCnM4ajy1LxETVhlb-Holo3MpjK3VKb0xMgdcrgpxsGTvbSr-BgAh3D7grj9XMvd4cmJUH3oEDph2Y4cH-nEyJoPNN99nlCV5_15LSfkuMeSZE1zdT4e/s1600/IMG_5427.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
These fabrics are all set for Playing With Value with Cheryl Arkison. I feel like there is so much for me to learn about color value and I jumped at the chance when I saw this class.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixHLCb6SGvTfvfJTzaBP9JT2JI6t0os4vdFQIc3-Yw5N3hWQW0DX0zC0_m_4mnVQEzsc2FOpy4f0JzRmseqQo94eUW-SCeF3PVKcjfv4NoeEGMgSXlnMfHZ26QpGblXtEztpFPMs4X43PA/s1600/IMG_5234.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixHLCb6SGvTfvfJTzaBP9JT2JI6t0os4vdFQIc3-Yw5N3hWQW0DX0zC0_m_4mnVQEzsc2FOpy4f0JzRmseqQo94eUW-SCeF3PVKcjfv4NoeEGMgSXlnMfHZ26QpGblXtEztpFPMs4X43PA/s1600/IMG_5234.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I've been slowly collecting my supplies in a basket so I don't forget anything.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV5_-HlcydXx5A_zjZ51GBF-CYmNK26tuPcbsuS7iPzIXoqc-8hk_sXVMit7n48KdjtRGxsqK2RxnLW6ttf7lFcna1FMOPQv672BwZmxRCjIwLZLrUanfPq4dX4COU-Wxw2mZtYEgNEl-n/s1600/IMG_5299.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV5_-HlcydXx5A_zjZ51GBF-CYmNK26tuPcbsuS7iPzIXoqc-8hk_sXVMit7n48KdjtRGxsqK2RxnLW6ttf7lFcna1FMOPQv672BwZmxRCjIwLZLrUanfPq4dX4COU-Wxw2mZtYEgNEl-n/s1600/IMG_5299.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I've also been building a list of things I want to do in Austin while I'm there. I use to live in Austin for 8 years while I was a student as the University of Texas and later as a young teacher.<br />
<br />
I will be: <br />
<ul>
<li>spending some of my time catching up with old friends and meeting precious children of the aforementioned old friends. </li>
<li>going to church where my husband and I attended and where we were married. There are lots of precious people there that I can't wait to hug. </li>
<li>eating a lot of food! Chuy's (my favorite restaurant), Texas BBQ, Whataburger, breakfast tacos, food trucks, etc. </li>
<li>visiting a HEB and Central Market grocery store. You have to be a Texan to understand this. I probably won't buy much, but I will enjoy it's general splendor and try not to loose the contentment I've finally achieved with my local Kroger here in the Memphis-area.</li>
<li>going to IKEA. We won't be getting an IKEA in Memphis until spring of 2016. I can't wait that long!</li>
<li>trying to savor the time spent with my nieces and nephew. I don't get to see them as often as I would like.</li>
<li>Last, but not least, I will finally be meeting all these wonderful quilters I've had the pleasure to meet through the blogging/online world in person. I can't even begin to contain my excitement! </li>
</ul>
This is going to be a great trip! I have a feeling I'll be using the word AWESOME to describe my week after it's all over. Safe travels to all those who are traveling as well. Looking forward to meeting you!<br />

I needed a larger bag to help hold all my Quiltcon class supplies and purchases. I decided on the <a href="http://ohfransson.bigcartel.com/product/sewing-circle-tote-pdf-sewing-pattern" target="_blank">Sewing Circle Tote</a> by <a href="http://www.ohfransson.typepad.com/" target="_blank">Elizabeth Hartman</a>.<br />

This bag was a pretty big undertaking, but it was totally worth it. I found this tonal herringbone print at Joann's that I thought would be perfect for the exterior fabric. It turned out better than I hoped for. The straps are a Denyse Schmidt print from Joann's The exterior front and back pockets along with the interior elastic pocket linings are <a href="https://www.fabric.com/buy/ej-123/anna-maria-horner-loulou-thi-summer-totem-strudel?&cm_mmc=Google-_-Products-_-Products%20Listings-_-Ads&CAWELAID=172000510000031543&CAGPSPN=pla&catargetid=172000510000277955&cadevice=c&gclid=CIfH_OLiy8MCFU07gQodqZMAQQ" target="_blank">Anna Maria Horner's LouLou Thi Summer Totem Strudel</a> print. I've been hording this print in my stash for over a year now and decided it was about time for me to use it. I ended up using coordinating prints to create the exterior side pockets and the interior zipper pocket linings since I didn't have enough of the main print. I think adding addition fabric in these select places really compliments the feature fabric nicely.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFsfF3AkyBYn1wuH41U1_VXE1FL-GN_duRujuDMtDIn0W-Wt_YG_cXHeMR7iCr0fIHpQn4lITlht4kNU8SQF5qF_yCakMlCNpqqKojnlxQH7WDrk2QUhi8TA1rNxMdM1ZHTUZsgBWb4VtS/s1600/IMG_5227.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFsfF3AkyBYn1wuH41U1_VXE1FL-GN_duRujuDMtDIn0W-Wt_YG_cXHeMR7iCr0fIHpQn4lITlht4kNU8SQF5qF_yCakMlCNpqqKojnlxQH7WDrk2QUhi8TA1rNxMdM1ZHTUZsgBWb4VtS/s1600/IMG_5227.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
I will go ahead and say that not just any machine can put this bag together. My old Bernina wouldn't have stood up to the challenge, but my Juki did pretty well even with the three broken needles. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKnnzMXoGuPSj639sSKzzaQOsCLPmM_HrpHJTtAXDjnHstMOYGD9QHK8riArcIsAHfOcIfqUEAYT93d4pSFUKqDTYaaV02_lVY-2byYHND92Z_5HCYCqsFW_FEM254kl4DB4G2lgZ4I5Md/s1600/IMG_5228+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKnnzMXoGuPSj639sSKzzaQOsCLPmM_HrpHJTtAXDjnHstMOYGD9QHK8riArcIsAHfOcIfqUEAYT93d4pSFUKqDTYaaV02_lVY-2byYHND92Z_5HCYCqsFW_FEM254kl4DB4G2lgZ4I5Md/s1600/IMG_5228+2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The finished product is wonderful. I don't think I could have picked a better bag to fit my needs. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHMDRS7VU_4KsvsyMZIO52R5r_86koZ8pdUqg7gHhouekkwYuGCzBZm82Js0BiK3rTQ5vzkHeuIIluISTV6bf29M9BF1N0eyS6IR9ww3HS6UwoqqGECM3YpVumPNIIR8klrvOGwZ6QEmpc/s1600/IMG_5229.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHMDRS7VU_4KsvsyMZIO52R5r_86koZ8pdUqg7gHhouekkwYuGCzBZm82Js0BiK3rTQ5vzkHeuIIluISTV6bf29M9BF1N0eyS6IR9ww3HS6UwoqqGECM3YpVumPNIIR8klrvOGwZ6QEmpc/s1600/IMG_5229.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
There are so many pockets that I can't imagine using them all, considering I'll also have my Sew Together Bag inside this bag at Quiltcon. I might surprise myself in the end, so I'm not completely ruling them all out. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEY8Zkkrx-OxoBNq5IkGKI3GRtc301DDEAKnFDgRGSTn6WeHnmov0JlDEqfi1u9Z6aXwZzaZ91qWUmtbxWzW4ypMmGRFxuyKQqpXjiLujUd-jf7qGSKqqzLoyVGE65ilHoxJgm_MyZHvWw/s1600/IMG_5230.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEY8Zkkrx-OxoBNq5IkGKI3GRtc301DDEAKnFDgRGSTn6WeHnmov0JlDEqfi1u9Z6aXwZzaZ91qWUmtbxWzW4ypMmGRFxuyKQqpXjiLujUd-jf7qGSKqqzLoyVGE65ilHoxJgm_MyZHvWw/s1600/IMG_5230.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
If I ever make this bag again, there are two things I would change. The first is not to forget to put the lining fabric on one of the outside pockets. I was totally in a groove and missed it. I didn't even realize it until it was way too late. It was one of those moments when you realize you have extra parts laying around and you shouldn't have. Oh, well...it's not noticeable. The second thing would be to put the top handles a bit closer together where they attach on the bag. The instructions said to line them up with the shoulder straps, and I'm not completely convinced that it's the best placement. It works fine as instructed, and it's definitely not a deal breaker, but I would move them closer together if I could rewind and do it again.<br />
<br />
So excited to be putting these bags to use very soon. I'll be showing them off at my upcoming guild meeting first.<br />

This simple pattern makes a bold statement when put together that allows the prints of the layered cake to shine while the solids of the charm pack create focal points throughout the quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB4_Kz7XnbEqxo5lCIrP-unHwiLblPK3EVVLHRjnz0mYUwl9bA_HPUXWqMo2PA_tZyfvjQ6BSdHLJVdb3SdpeXjZYSEIf9w2s0tCM9c7YLDAZ4-_j5gNoxh1CLt115n2BeKEsW7KWCd7Wd/s1600/IMG_5322.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB4_Kz7XnbEqxo5lCIrP-unHwiLblPK3EVVLHRjnz0mYUwl9bA_HPUXWqMo2PA_tZyfvjQ6BSdHLJVdb3SdpeXjZYSEIf9w2s0tCM9c7YLDAZ4-_j5gNoxh1CLt115n2BeKEsW7KWCd7Wd/s1600/IMG_5322.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
For this quilt I chose the ever-popular <a href="http://www.cottonandsteelfabrics.com/catalog/fabric/collection/2/" target="_blank">Cotton and Steel August</a> collection by Sarah Watts. The colors and prints are bright and bold. I wanted to choose something that would shine with the large cuts of fabric. <br />

<br />
This quilt is going to be a gift for some friends of ours. Although this pattern makes the perfect lap quilt for people of average height, it is a bit inadequate for someone of great stature. I added the border and the remaining charm squares to the corners to add a bit of size to make it an appropriately proportioned lap quilt for someone of unusual height.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioCe5XpxU7fQkHxHzPJbsI2oyTAL6UTAPtX4Cyc4yzBAzqwDVcp53VfYgKCNSEdbhMIR9tX4TYuivrqItnQ2c7hz0qOr9CSeXGBFPVFlTWknF0K_T5_CWWnnuXarFW8RhhPOpTVi7RLjrH/s1600/IMG_5327.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioCe5XpxU7fQkHxHzPJbsI2oyTAL6UTAPtX4Cyc4yzBAzqwDVcp53VfYgKCNSEdbhMIR9tX4TYuivrqItnQ2c7hz0qOr9CSeXGBFPVFlTWknF0K_T5_CWWnnuXarFW8RhhPOpTVi7RLjrH/s1600/IMG_5327.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The back of the quilt utilizes the remaining pieces left over from the layered cake along with some coordinating yardage. <br />

I finally built up the courage and tackled the <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/sewing/accessory/sew-together-bag/36309">Sew Together Bag</a> by SewDemented. Thanks to the additional instructions from <a href="http://quiltbarn.blogspot.com/2014/03/sew-long.html" target="_blank">The Quilt Barn</a>, I was able to put this bag together successfully. This bag took me three nights to put together. The first night I cut all the fabric, attached the interfacing, and created the outside quilted cover.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy7PvYUQKwcYSCxzsTNpwm6cxgQRKnDGmXmiqfe6WU1I3ZrEkEsGiGdFEzv0PzsRFDEPfHgc-5N_o4hpVGMGdHZBgayAKa32wY32EmzQEZ_NdQ49P3GU9bdYE04Slzl3rOjcfLontLcGWZ/s1600/IMG_5176.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy7PvYUQKwcYSCxzsTNpwm6cxgQRKnDGmXmiqfe6WU1I3ZrEkEsGiGdFEzv0PzsRFDEPfHgc-5N_o4hpVGMGdHZBgayAKa32wY32EmzQEZ_NdQ49P3GU9bdYE04Slzl3rOjcfLontLcGWZ/s1600/IMG_5176.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The second night I put the inside of the bag together with the sides. The third night I completed the outside of the bag and the handles.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh__tJ6nljaj4prstvJFCGmJqY3mrM-px12GeQcTu25yDkmP3Z1BM_tv6izUhuWVYDB2izNz88bXSeTbkK6rYdL7iu-DUMsTMdePrzyXV90WxZSY5zTIJAss1FQKQ3ggjCcCSEXtUz4VC8A/s1600/IMG_5180.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh__tJ6nljaj4prstvJFCGmJqY3mrM-px12GeQcTu25yDkmP3Z1BM_tv6izUhuWVYDB2izNz88bXSeTbkK6rYdL7iu-DUMsTMdePrzyXV90WxZSY5zTIJAss1FQKQ3ggjCcCSEXtUz4VC8A/s1600/IMG_5180.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
I was able to use the leftovers I had of the Carnaby Street collection to put this bag together. It's a beautiful collection, and I think it was a wonderful choice for this bag. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5y7jLXD5U-p7YLK1En3IXGMJpJIWg5Ff1VRrqeYhMvuDI5DxaNTtKPjU4IOshmVQb04sKKBHuGLme2zSp5f6GdFo3oIeLLbAIRuxl-gJheunDkVIJFSxCL8alfic1TbFFHgmsWaOMx10K/s1600/IMG_5181.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5y7jLXD5U-p7YLK1En3IXGMJpJIWg5Ff1VRrqeYhMvuDI5DxaNTtKPjU4IOshmVQb04sKKBHuGLme2zSp5f6GdFo3oIeLLbAIRuxl-gJheunDkVIJFSxCL8alfic1TbFFHgmsWaOMx10K/s1600/IMG_5181.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
The inside lining just pops, and I really love how it turned out. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkOThTclrKsXMv8Se2jlfsVCIEF-3FNVL-U0CvthhnZuKCKA_newQnoQ3DjvCecMiRgQhbXJuOpq3JmG4TXob5-ntSQyvCAZMVujrmOO28TqmiovxhBP7xl5Q_Y516MMGsJv6_cQxz7r8B/s1600/IMG_5186.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkOThTclrKsXMv8Se2jlfsVCIEF-3FNVL-U0CvthhnZuKCKA_newQnoQ3DjvCecMiRgQhbXJuOpq3JmG4TXob5-ntSQyvCAZMVujrmOO28TqmiovxhBP7xl5Q_Y516MMGsJv6_cQxz7r8B/s1600/IMG_5186.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I was also really happy that I had enough of the pocket lining fabric. Along with the zipper colors, this might be my favorite part. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This has been a wonderful bag that I've truly enjoyed using the last couple of weeks. I'm looking forward to taking it to Quiltcon!Janet @ Simply Piecedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07932316774768732089noreply@blogger.com19tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584545750846901013.post-8955838469057032002015-02-04T10:43:00.000-06:002015-02-04T11:34:27.074-06:00Broken HerringboneHi everyone! January was filled with lots of things: sewing, illness, sewing, illness, work, stitches, illness, etc. I'm hoping my kids are done being sick/hurt because I no longer have any sick days left. Oh, the joys of parenthood. I've been spending a lot of time this month finishing up 2 quilts, getting ready to teach a basic quilt-piecing class, and getting ready for Quiltcon, which is only 15 days away from today. Before I can launch into what I'm currently working on, I still need to finish up blogging about the last quilt I made in 2014. Without further adieu, here is the Broken Herringbone quilt.<br />

This quilt is the gift we gave my brother-in-law for Christmas. He's a bachelor in his early 30's. I wanted to make him a quilt that was masculine in fabric selection and in design. The broken herringbone has those wonderful rough edges. The majority of the fabrics come from Parson Gray's collections, which is the epitome of masculine fabrics. <br />

<br />
I wanted to throw in a pop of color, so I went with the burnt orange. There isn't a speck of orange in any of the prints, but I really love how it turned out. <br />

Now that I've finally wrapped up 2014, I promise to catch up on 2015 very soon. I have so much to share!Janet @ Simply Piecedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07932316774768732089noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584545750846901013.post-88843582794728527772015-01-02T09:44:00.001-06:002015-01-02T12:16:15.981-06:00Garden LatticeThis quilt has been a long time coming. I've had the fabric for this quilt for a few years now, but couldn't decide what I wanted to do with it. I finally found a picture on Pinterest that caught my attention, made a few alterations, and started it before I could change my mind again. The timing was perfect since we were going to Maryland for Christmas and this quilt was for my in-laws. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIb8SD1OuGtbI1U-2fAQPMbAmdzTQevmHaZVu0ZO5Tj53GF4WPxq_kBw_kLYgkmLYE4QRkRQSebb-gLHKKAuKJw_uuWAahyphenhyphengVRBleSoFP7uXINvM37qPufywjvQ3N6eqHPkrlXmBZmc2jA/s1600/IMG_5070.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIb8SD1OuGtbI1U-2fAQPMbAmdzTQevmHaZVu0ZO5Tj53GF4WPxq_kBw_kLYgkmLYE4QRkRQSebb-gLHKKAuKJw_uuWAahyphenhyphengVRBleSoFP7uXINvM37qPufywjvQ3N6eqHPkrlXmBZmc2jA/s1600/IMG_5070.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm not sure of the official name of this pattern, but I call it Garden Lattice. With the Flea Market Fancy prints and the layout of the fabric, it reminded me of a lattice you would find in a garden.<br />

We are very blessed in this country to have full access to fresh water at any time, but there are billions of people in this world who do not have this privilege. In the spirit of<a href="http://www.adventconspiracy.org/" target="_blank"> Advent Conspiracy</a>, <a href="http://www.ncmidtown.com/" target="_blank">Neighborhood Church</a> (the church I'm a member of in Memphis, TN) hosted the first of two fundraisers for <a href="https://donate.charitywater.org/home" target="_blank">Charity: Water</a>, an organization that builds fresh water wells in areas where fresh water is not readily available. The basic principles for Advent Conspiracy are: <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: blue;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;">Worship Fully</span></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;">Spend Less</span></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #6aa84f;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;">Give More</span></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
We hosted a silent auction (<b><span style="color: #6aa84f;">Give More</span></b>) along with a Christmas program (<b><span style="color: blue;">Worship Fully</span></b>). My children
and husband all participated in the program while I made a few items for
the auction, where 100% of the proceeds went directly to Charity: Water (<span style="color: purple;"><b>Love All</b></span>). I really wanted to stick with the theme of water and had the perfect fabric in my stash to do it for my first auction entry. I made a pillow and table-runner set featuring water drops.<br />

<br />
The second item I donated to the auction was my <a href="http://simplypieced.blogspot.com/2014/07/lava-lamp-quilt.html" target="_blank">Lava Lamp Quilt</a>. I had been hanging on to this quilt for several months, but it was the first thing I thought of when approached to make some items for the auction.<br />

<br />
The silent auction was a HUGE success and I'm already thinking about what I can make for next year. Before I can focus on next year, I need to finish the two quilts I'm making for Christmas gifts (<span style="color: #990000;"><b>Spend Less</b></span>) this year. I finished quilting my Garden Lattice quilt and I'm binding it whenever I have a free moment to just sit and hand stitch.<br />

I've also started quilting my broken chevron quilt. I debated between using a light grey or a dark grey thread for the quilting. With the help of friends on <a href="http://instagram.com/simplypieced" target="_blank">Instagram</a>, I'm going with the dark grey thread. I hope to have the quilting finished by Thursday.<br />

It's a win-win situation. Aside from sewing up a storm, I finished all my Christmas shopping, all Christmas decorations are up with the assistance of my two little elves, and the Thanksgiving meal was a success thanks to a local Chinese restaurant down the street. Yes, you read that correctly. Thanksgiving dinner in my house is Chinese takeout...I love me some vegetable fried rice. This tradition might look a bit different if we actually lived close to family (and turkey was on my list of things I love to eat), but that's just not the way it is. As a full-time working mother of 2 very spirited children, I choose the easy route of reducing stress and not cooking. Happy Thanksgiving!<br />
<br />
Lets get back to all that sewing I was able to accomplish. I finished two quilt tops and a quilt back. That's success if I do say so myself. The first quilt top I finished was a scrap busting project I was determined to finish. This quilt probably won't be touched again until after Christmas, but it was fun to put together. To see how I came up with the design, check out my previous <a href="http://simplypieced.blogspot.com/2014/11/scrap-busting-part-2.html" target="_blank">post</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPEgAo6SfHM3jiXXfrSmiMFM3XvU51uN8XHasBnKKP5eQ9mRH-uPArOB0BZIu77OW7wN0lJKKbhCbxlOKdhvRRVl7w0XxfxA-_LtCg2cX09qo-5MAWe3ewNa-IFiuuZb98a6Fxhpsf9PMV/s1600/IMG_4915.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPEgAo6SfHM3jiXXfrSmiMFM3XvU51uN8XHasBnKKP5eQ9mRH-uPArOB0BZIu77OW7wN0lJKKbhCbxlOKdhvRRVl7w0XxfxA-_LtCg2cX09qo-5MAWe3ewNa-IFiuuZb98a6Fxhpsf9PMV/s1600/IMG_4915.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm thinking a white and black print for the backing and a solid bold color for the binding. What do you think?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOCFP1ft9XIQQA2emzvWRfxCQIrcsVM-aGdG0pkC-mGnHB_QvGZIxqWBWhqWTooNTdnx6JLmDjLcAfqTmFDqiEbZIrUSvdpnwazgEtuc4S33HMkSlqok13nOjbSDHuIm_CETe6vI8nd04v/s1600/IMG_4909_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOCFP1ft9XIQQA2emzvWRfxCQIrcsVM-aGdG0pkC-mGnHB_QvGZIxqWBWhqWTooNTdnx6JLmDjLcAfqTmFDqiEbZIrUSvdpnwazgEtuc4S33HMkSlqok13nOjbSDHuIm_CETe6vI8nd04v/s1600/IMG_4909_2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The second quilt top I finished is a broken-chevron pattern. I'm not sure on the correct name of this pattern, but it was fairly easy to assemble. I've seen a few of these online and easily figured out the measurements myself. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGNhIpRtepLjM5eIWJJnTArHN8k5Pq5ycjne1FELmrZQf3P3qwRcWeJTBZLf4ln8Bt9Zelue0hRj8YLsAdAehKzbtLpQySINplE16zJ0nrV3PY-uzlL-jvS3shzxGG5FTl-O5UN1TlwfMX/s1600/IMG_4932_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGNhIpRtepLjM5eIWJJnTArHN8k5Pq5ycjne1FELmrZQf3P3qwRcWeJTBZLf4ln8Bt9Zelue0hRj8YLsAdAehKzbtLpQySINplE16zJ0nrV3PY-uzlL-jvS3shzxGG5FTl-O5UN1TlwfMX/s1600/IMG_4932_2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The back for this quilt top is finished as well, and I'm waiting until I have the back for my <a href="http://simplypieced.blogspot.com/2014/11/my-garden-lattice-grew.html" target="_blank">garden lattice quilt top</a> finished before I throw myself a basting party in preparation for quilting. The quilting for this quilt and the garden lattice quilt has to be completed before December 19th, which is completely doable. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPbkoJZ2JJaSJwk-qQTMf4DPk3bw0G3nX2s5vKqkoFOFSkp6pknuX6kMFRFIvbajgj9qc7N7CVMLhLbCtbLyg3HTCz7cCWFpqiYtyypWz1nqPnOFt_CjroHpjdAku3NgXPTH6KYssycCrq/s1600/IMG_4943.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPbkoJZ2JJaSJwk-qQTMf4DPk3bw0G3nX2s5vKqkoFOFSkp6pknuX6kMFRFIvbajgj9qc7N7CVMLhLbCtbLyg3HTCz7cCWFpqiYtyypWz1nqPnOFt_CjroHpjdAku3NgXPTH6KYssycCrq/s1600/IMG_4943.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
Somewhere in there I also have to make a table runner and a decorative pillow for a silent auction. Wish me luck!Janet @ Simply Piecedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07932316774768732089noreply@blogger.com19tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584545750846901013.post-25125859579243155862014-11-26T11:45:00.000-06:002014-11-26T11:45:34.360-06:00Scrap Busting Part 2In my original <a href="http://simplypieced.blogspot.com/2014/11/scrap-busting.html" target="_blank">Scrap Busting</a> post, I shared a mystery scrap project I started working on after I finished my scrappy herringbone quilt top. I use the word "mystery" very literally since it was even a mystery to me. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjeQCjFglHLJ_9b9ExQyTj1VWE5UL4IsCKe-d3_aq55UeK6lgghBzrLcpXBWo0oIuI_cFV2UtbRMVNRP-Xo6AjdHdnLBytMF_Byi1Mpdbvz6aoVrE1ErcZnqeg4HFeaq-YayuOJukgfRJp/s1600/IMG_4885_2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjeQCjFglHLJ_9b9ExQyTj1VWE5UL4IsCKe-d3_aq55UeK6lgghBzrLcpXBWo0oIuI_cFV2UtbRMVNRP-Xo6AjdHdnLBytMF_Byi1Mpdbvz6aoVrE1ErcZnqeg4HFeaq-YayuOJukgfRJp/s1600/IMG_4885_2.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
I started out with lots of left over scrappy strips that I turned into scrappy blocks. I then created scrappy HST. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisGqguCNFBKRHv_4YYWOeCr4VLWu-ltJa7c_jtVk6H-BhPQBF1u7S45rWmp7-9NoIQ29gpxdZvOGTBDoYcP9R3hlMHTfLatYhIYYoFhc2yKX7YVT7JKaaypE4V8fP4-Hyo4ChCB839EUEU/s1600/IMG_4888.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisGqguCNFBKRHv_4YYWOeCr4VLWu-ltJa7c_jtVk6H-BhPQBF1u7S45rWmp7-9NoIQ29gpxdZvOGTBDoYcP9R3hlMHTfLatYhIYYoFhc2yKX7YVT7JKaaypE4V8fP4-Hyo4ChCB839EUEU/s1600/IMG_4888.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
I ended up with 76 scrappy HST that I trimmed to 8 inches. At this point, I still didn't know what I was going to do with them. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitInTS1CBEoB9rkW1WEW71w66x10IxTAOl2OhjCDcMZY1SnEg6HqgJ5m8qOth5uaphA9OdCjcg_SXvQRzD35V8_DXtlugM4nqZycJX35UQ12plx0qdr67N-9q_JGTOkCq5yyEClcBiz2QD/s1600/IMG_4890.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitInTS1CBEoB9rkW1WEW71w66x10IxTAOl2OhjCDcMZY1SnEg6HqgJ5m8qOth5uaphA9OdCjcg_SXvQRzD35V8_DXtlugM4nqZycJX35UQ12plx0qdr67N-9q_JGTOkCq5yyEClcBiz2QD/s1600/IMG_4890.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
I sat down on the floor in my living room with all the HST and just started laying them out. I started trying to be completely random...didn't like it. I then tried arranging them to create diamonds by color...wasn't feeling it. Throughout this process, I started noticing a mirror effect when matched up with it's caddy-corner HST from the original 12.5" blocks paired together to create 4 HST. (Have I lost anyone yet?)<br />
<br />
Here's a diagram. Start out with two 12.5" blocks of different colors. Place right sides together with one block turned and sew a 1/4" seam around each outer edge. Use a rotary cutter to cut each diagonal. This gives you 4 HST that measure roughly 8.5". Take the 2 HST that are caddy-corner to each other and sew together to get the mirrored effect. Does that make more sense? I hope so.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB1OUrp1bZcYG1gq_r2GeWG4pwINAr-iWo-vn-NsGBVTDOeRe5MXZ4gBPy6pWkrtouddOcpYg1ZOWYzrqzeYJzF-4tlLJzLBTWs3PpMN3HmHZ6xj9DKjAV6vDQ0jKJzOMvddMk2TcAgSkp/s1600/scrappy+flying+geese.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB1OUrp1bZcYG1gq_r2GeWG4pwINAr-iWo-vn-NsGBVTDOeRe5MXZ4gBPy6pWkrtouddOcpYg1ZOWYzrqzeYJzF-4tlLJzLBTWs3PpMN3HmHZ6xj9DKjAV6vDQ0jKJzOMvddMk2TcAgSkp/s1600/scrappy+flying+geese.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's what my scrappy flying geese look like.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_XHm5MOiKJENrvwrxlGED3AZD1Z0l8P_qJ6Ek7AgtuFQuIv-MrGcCx2LLHAP7GOgFBGkcQGlIdV2KFrOPKqojoDzWpqPfHQ-5Hy0o1J46unSI0Otj6vJnnSiAjMdSZCx1_K8LxyzPrt-Q/s1600/IMG_4897.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_XHm5MOiKJENrvwrxlGED3AZD1Z0l8P_qJ6Ek7AgtuFQuIv-MrGcCx2LLHAP7GOgFBGkcQGlIdV2KFrOPKqojoDzWpqPfHQ-5Hy0o1J46unSI0Otj6vJnnSiAjMdSZCx1_K8LxyzPrt-Q/s1600/IMG_4897.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I have to admit that I love the clean cut mirrored look the diagram gives for the example, but this scrappy mess is also lots of fun. It takes a bit more effort to find the pattern when the strips are all different sizes and not necessarily all the same exact fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhES0mGacA2coeuwppVaFV9JAbd7YVNhobZGYvnHdJY0jZs_BVEuiELhXLufvJYf9mpFIfadrxXRtZfTKVVSvXmErPARnL2w9zTn-kXltUM5yqZsTR-t9WHoQmmv1q5J13julDOqREQ5PRP/s1600/IMG_4901.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhES0mGacA2coeuwppVaFV9JAbd7YVNhobZGYvnHdJY0jZs_BVEuiELhXLufvJYf9mpFIfadrxXRtZfTKVVSvXmErPARnL2w9zTn-kXltUM5yqZsTR-t9WHoQmmv1q5J13julDOqREQ5PRP/s1600/IMG_4901.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I should have the quilt top pieced by this evening. I can now officially say my scraps have been BUSTED!Janet @ Simply Piecedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07932316774768732089noreply@blogger.com29tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584545750846901013.post-60963394649874478962014-11-24T10:51:00.000-06:002014-11-24T11:03:40.287-06:00Scrap BustingI've been in a scrap-busting mode lately. I finally finished the top of my scrappy herringbone last night.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyk04wNNLMrw_F8W7umQDhkemArb_LJrl4OAF64cVIWMDOxb6cbhtchVpzG5IAyut8q-bGEV3X7T92zI1bzL0V24tZqvA_N8_Aim1sNlpOCDaWGVeGHR8S3wrSLVvrmcK6O2V_ScfT6DtW/s1600/IMG_4879_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyk04wNNLMrw_F8W7umQDhkemArb_LJrl4OAF64cVIWMDOxb6cbhtchVpzG5IAyut8q-bGEV3X7T92zI1bzL0V24tZqvA_N8_Aim1sNlpOCDaWGVeGHR8S3wrSLVvrmcK6O2V_ScfT6DtW/s1600/IMG_4879_2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
My plan for the rest of this quilt is a black and white backing (still to be determined) and possibly a grey binding. I'm not completely sold on that one yet, so the color is still up in the air. <br />
<br />
I still have TONS of scraps left over. I started sewing them together by color to form 12.5" squares and turning them into HST.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcsHl_WK-wwZFf1ScQTVwnl99QOsO9JO6njpOsp2ypJaenru5pyr_f9wv3TyoWe68uPUdhiIGaDLHjiZBvhU3cRYoqDh_ZvEDusiSasr3gqVg-xD9Ah-veriME8NeQdXQOSvJDpeyBvVOs/s1600/IMG_4885_2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcsHl_WK-wwZFf1ScQTVwnl99QOsO9JO6njpOsp2ypJaenru5pyr_f9wv3TyoWe68uPUdhiIGaDLHjiZBvhU3cRYoqDh_ZvEDusiSasr3gqVg-xD9Ah-veriME8NeQdXQOSvJDpeyBvVOs/s1600/IMG_4885_2.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
This was my trial run to determine if it was even worth it. With one 12.5" aqua block and one 12.5" yellow block, I was able to create four 8.5" HST blocks. I think this looks pretty cool and has lots of potential. We shall see where this takes me.<br />
<br />

<br />
I had fun learning how to reverse applique to create this mini. I've been working with scraps lately and decided to use the scraps from my scrap quilt that I'm putting together to create this fun little project.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwvvgTXO_CTvjjANCPCagAMa6VoPu7x2cKWAr307y9hT6lrAs7Ng_btc83xevq8VnPSWaIVpgROdDrdq30PR-Qat72eJV_iPJNG6sIfbPwmr4iWJZW6FPIKebK_tIS_7GTW8cZxs-QUXC9/s1600/IMG_4855.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwvvgTXO_CTvjjANCPCagAMa6VoPu7x2cKWAr307y9hT6lrAs7Ng_btc83xevq8VnPSWaIVpgROdDrdq30PR-Qat72eJV_iPJNG6sIfbPwmr4iWJZW6FPIKebK_tIS_7GTW8cZxs-QUXC9/s1600/IMG_4855.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
I also enjoyed FMQ the wavy lines. The effect it gives is perfect. Plus, it's hard to make a mistake with this technique.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSL97hgokRmam1VlzfuxXzIjeVAktjV8rrK-I9gvcYZCYY4Xat1cNeIPFxczCsY9UOpba9O2kH8Oi0HyeTDmVSb7JZ5BUCDeuN-YxJyAA-KnufY9BpTZnQwSTBMwEaC4ieK-zM-G08Tmlj/s1600/IMG_4841.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSL97hgokRmam1VlzfuxXzIjeVAktjV8rrK-I9gvcYZCYY4Xat1cNeIPFxczCsY9UOpba9O2kH8Oi0HyeTDmVSb7JZ5BUCDeuN-YxJyAA-KnufY9BpTZnQwSTBMwEaC4ieK-zM-G08Tmlj/s1600/IMG_4841.JPG" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj410rAcavj4afH9YRCFeRTAKw0xCwls2EajnpKdpHi_8TDFqBSmq4tf6qj9QEAr_6CCXfK-35u8hSBWO2C-jG05MiRvMQgvWzqEpPvJv9XaXXrkUJltZq-MEvBCfq60geKubFljUgwBN1Q/s1600/IMG_4859.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj410rAcavj4afH9YRCFeRTAKw0xCwls2EajnpKdpHi_8TDFqBSmq4tf6qj9QEAr_6CCXfK-35u8hSBWO2C-jG05MiRvMQgvWzqEpPvJv9XaXXrkUJltZq-MEvBCfq60geKubFljUgwBN1Q/s1600/IMG_4859.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I found this teal binding fabric at the store that was a great accent to the colors of the scraps and the dark grey overlay. I found the navy and teal fabric in my stash that worked perfectly as the backing. <br />

Now that this little distraction of a project is done, I will return to my scrappy quilt.<br />

I've always loved the way it looks and had a bunch of scraps laying around from a scrappy quilt I'm working on right now.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgszujPjT51G-EO2Ika6YVNmSYNZoj1MqAQc7LXRMWB9lk9oqKicVIEfWSG84pCQLtmTJrPjZCq43nKzj2yF3Wn5BLDyT4HDMed7qHCaLnW14VklfEGmx1r6GCAII2msV6AK-xMqDbf9CSA/s1600/IMG_4815.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgszujPjT51G-EO2Ika6YVNmSYNZoj1MqAQc7LXRMWB9lk9oqKicVIEfWSG84pCQLtmTJrPjZCq43nKzj2yF3Wn5BLDyT4HDMed7qHCaLnW14VklfEGmx1r6GCAII2msV6AK-xMqDbf9CSA/s1600/IMG_4815.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
I didn't have any freezer paper, so I used interfacing. Although it works, the interfacing is very thick. <br />

<br />
I'm about half way through quilting this one. With the backing fabric, batting, interfacing, and two layers of fabric on top, this is a very THICK quilting project. I'm hoping to be done with the quilting tonight so I can put the binding on and be done with it. <br />

The binding material is the teal fabric on the top left corner of the picture. It should pop against the dark grey. Most of the quilt entries were a bit...ummm...traditional. Three of our members entered quilts and we also had a booth showing off modern quilting.<br />

We also challenged people to try some improvisational piecing. There's Kelly from <a href="http://myquiltinfatuation.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">My Quilt Infatuation</a> ready to help anyone with the piecing. <br />

It was a busy weekend, but well wort it. I loved meeting local quilters from all backgrounds and recruiting new members. It was time well spent. <br />
<br />
Thanks to a sick little boy, I had some time at home this week. I finished up all my scrap strips and started piecing the strips together. I'm making a large (80x80) herringbone quilt. I finished up 2 columns last night and have 8 more to go. This is going to be one very colorful quilt and I'm exceptionally giddy about it.<br />

I can already tell that I have way more scraps than I need for this quilt, so I need some more projects to use them all up. Any suggestions?Janet @ Simply Piecedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07932316774768732089noreply@blogger.com4
