A Spiral Swoon

Let me first start with the fact that I'm completely enchanted with the swoon pattern.  I have dreamed of making a large quilt with this pattern for some time, but just haven't found the time.  When my college roommate told me she was expecting her first baby, I decided to toss my selfish and greedy nature aside and make the swoon for someone else instead.  I can always make more later, right?

So, I took the pattern and doubled it to created a 48" block, which is perfect for a baby blanket.  It was kinda weird working with such large pieces, but this pattern has every ability to stand on it's own.  Doubling the size made the swoon even more amazing!  Here's a friendly reminder that I had to learn the hard way.  When doubling the size of a quilt block pattern, remember the cutting measurements also double the seam allowances.  You have to take 1/2 inch off the double size or you will be doing lots of trimming later like I did.  Thankfully, I caught onto the issue before it was too late, but I did have to trim up everything a second time.

My college roommate gave birth 6-weeks early, and her beautiful daughter is currently residing in the NICU until she weighs enough to go home.  I had to get my tail in high gear to get this one done.  I'll be mailing it off today and hopefully it will be at its new home awaiting her arrival.  We also had a fun snow day yesterday, and I couldn't resist taking pictures of the quilt outside.  I've been so jealous of some of the other beautiful winter landscapes I've seen on other blogs.  My backyard may not be the same beautiful landscape, but the snow is still a fun addition to the pictures.

For the back, I took the scraps from trimming the flying geese and created a chevron pattern.  I really like the unexpected surprise it provides for the back when you flip the quilt over.

Now that I've gotten some good use out of the snow, it can go away.  Come on Spring!!!!

  20. wow! your fabric choices are impeccable, as always. absolutely love it! and the fact that it's going to a preemie melts my heart even more. been there a few times! like, 5. I sure hope mama and baby are doing well. hugs to them both from a mama who understands. I wonder what the size requirement is? they sent my 6 weeker home at only 5lb 8 oz! when he dropped more weight, I was sure they would want him back. but we both survived and now he's a very healthy almost 10 yr old.

ps - what selfish nature are you referring to? seems like everything you do is for someone else. =) you are the baby quilt gifting queen!
